I think that James listened to this type of music because it drowned out everything. Having this music on meant that he would not have to think about his past, his granddad or the bullying, the music was a way to escape from all of that. It meant he could listen to someone else's views and take them in as his own in order to leave the old James behind and become a different person. (Source 7)

Skinhead Music
I have decided to research what kind of music the skinheads listened to because in the play we have decided to add some punk music into it. In order to understand why James listens to the music I want to research how the music that skinheads listened to changed through the years.
Skin heads originally listened to black popular music such as soul, rocksteady and early reggae. However later on reggae music started to feature themes of black nationalism in their lyrics. This caused tension between the black and white skinheads.
They then began to listen to punk rock and in the late seventies skinheads embraced Oi! Oi was working class music and was punk mixed with football chants, pub rock and glam rock. This music was very aggressive and had lots of political views in it.

Evaluation of lesson scene 3 (16-1-14)
In todays lesson I think that we worked very well together and our scene content is very good. So far I think the scenes have been very impressive and we are all giving input to the process.
At the beginning of the lesson we showed our scenes that we had been working on over the week. The first scene (scene 3) was full of energy and kept the audience focused throughout. After watching this scene we watched the other scenes which I will talk about later and then Sam directed scene 3 to the rest of the class.
Sam was an amazing director, he told people clearly what to do and answered everyone's questions. He also gave us little tips and techniques we could use in the piece for example before the fighting he got us all to do the breathing sound.
The lesson went extremely well and most of us were focused however we still have seventeen more scenes to go so we need to work a lot harder in order to get the scenes done faster.
We can do this by =
The Groups
Scene 3
Scene three was very well rehearsed and it kept the audience interested. They used lots of technical skills including lifts and sound effects and they also used props to make the scene come to life. The only thing that they could have improved on was in the scene they had an action for every line so to make the scene a bit shorter and easier to direct they could have not made every line literal.
Scene 4
This scene lacked energy and didn't keep the audience interested because their were no sudden changes to excite the audience. To improve they should have used more technical skills and had more expression in their voices and body because it was quite boring to watch.
Scene 5
This was the scene that I was in and our piece was well rehearsed. we used technical skills and had changes to keep the audience interested. We could have made the piece more technical but we decided to make it simple so if we had to direct, we could have taught it to the class quickly. The performance would have been even better if we had a few more bullies and unfortunately I kneed myself in the face so I didn't perform like I did in rehearsal.
Scene 6
Scene six was another good scene, it was not consistent because it was better at the end than at the beginning but they used lots of technical skills and I really enjoyed watching it. I especially liked the bit when they held up Fenton upside down (thrill) because it fitted the piece perfectly and shocked the audience.

- We should not ask to many questions, if we have questions that are not really important we should ask the director after class.
- If a question is asked everyone should be listening so that the same question is not asked again.
- When given a line you need to remember your lines otherwise it slows down the rehearsal.
- Remember your blocking because it will waste time having to go over it.
- We all need to concentrate more, we should not be talking when waiting for the director to tell us what to do.
- Not everyone word needs an action, it doesn't have to all be literal because this makes the scene very long, you can just say a line.

Evaluation of scene 1 & 2
Over the past few lessons we have been working on scene 1 and 2 and which we finally finished last lesson. We took a lot of time making up these scenes because we did them in great depth and we changed some things we didn't like because the transitions were not smooth enough.
Working as part as an ensemble has been a great experience, We all work together to solve problems and change things in the play (we try not to drop the ball.) We also all have an input in the process of making the scene so we all get a chance to show skills we would like to be used in the play.
So far I believe the scenes are great. Lots of physical theatre has been used to emphasize the lines and I believe it is consistently at a high standard. Some bits I believe we have worked on longer than others so they look a bit better but we will go back to the other bits to make them neater and make sure everyone knows exactly what they are doing.
However there are a few things we do need to clean up a little. Some people still don't know their lines that well, this interrupts the lesson and we begin to lose focus so everyone should know their lines. Also many of our lines are supposed to be said in unison, we need to work more on this because lots of the time people forget so only a few people say the line and other times people say other lines when it isn't supposed to be that line. To improve this I would recommend people to watch the physical script video and also on their own script mark the bits that are supposed to be said in unison.
When these few things are perfected I think scene one and two will be memorizing due to all the action taking place.

Our Performance
Our group - Me, Charlie, Eleanor, Sam, Kit, Kitty
M7 = I decide to give my group a Merit because we demonstrated technical skills in the performance however our performance was not consistent. We had really good parts in it such as the stairs, interacting with the audience, mirroring and having energy in our hands but other parts were not as good so we couldn't achieve a Distinction. Throughout the rehearsals we all gave an input into the performance and changed thing when they did not work well. We were all committed to most of the rehearsals and we didn't lose focus. Our energy was good and we were all engaged with the task but some bits could have been better. We all knew exactly what we were doing and our purpose because we ran through our objectives for the whole scene prior to the performance.
Improvement
To improve I think our transitions could have been smoother and our lines could have been more synchronized. We could have made the bad bits better using more technical skills and at some points we muffled our speech so we should have made sure every line could have been heard clearly because they were all important. Finally we should have been more aware of our audience because at some points the audience couldn't see our facial expressions which we used quite a lot to tell the story.

Questions to ask yourself
Pass:
Do I use some technical skills during rehearsal?
Do I use my personal skills in rehearsal?
Do I make a positive contribution during the process of the piece?
Do I show my personal strengths and demonstrate technical performance skills in rehearsal?
Do I consistently contribute to the process both positively and constructively?
Distinction:
Distinction:
Do I use personal and technical skills in rehearsal?
Do I consistently contribute to the process both positively and constructively?
Am I fully committed to rehearsals and my character?
Am I consistently engaged in the rehearsal and give input to the piece?
Do I reflect on my performance and see what I could have changed to make it better?
Assessing the other groups
Group 1 - Lara, Chloe, Toby, Emily, Fifi, Edgar
D8 = I decided to give this group a distinction 8 because their whole performance throughout was very strong and made the audience think. They were all fully engaged and committed to the performance which I could see because no one broke character and everyone knew exactly what they were doing. The performance was well rehearsed and lots of energy was used throughout the piece. I also saw technical skills used in the performance making the movement and speech more interesting to watch. I really enjoyed watching their performance and I also saw them rehearse so I watched them all give an input to the performance so they were all involved when in the process of making the scene.
Improvement
To improve their performance some of the lines from the scene were cut out which I think could have been kept in because every line said in the scene is important, so I would like to have seen them use every line. Also through most of the performance I could see what their objectives were, however at some points there was no objective so they could have maybe gone through what their objectives were so everyone knew their purpose for each line. Finally they could have changed the way they spoke their lines more, they did change their voices a bit for example shouting and whispering but even more varieties would have made the performance even better.
Sir's Grade = D7
Group 2 - Olivia, Clay, Sam, Thaliqua, Courtney, Dru
M6 = I gave this group a merit 6 because it was a good performance that everyone was involved it. There were some technical skills used in the performance, however not throughout. Some parts of the performance were really good, but other parts were not so their performance was not consistent, therefore I could not give them a distinction. It was well rehearsed and interesting to watch.
Improvement
At one point one of them broke character because they messed up a line so next time they should try not to show it and the rest of the group members should try not to notice it and should move on. Also their transitions and lines could be smoother because sometimes there was nothing happening on stage and the audience had to wait until something was said therefore interest in the performance was lost because the energy dropped. Finally they should all have objectives, this will help them not come out of character and will mean they keep the energy up.
Sir's Grade = M5
Group 3 - Fenton, Lauren, Dnai
M5 = This group had lots of good skills but like group 2 some bits were better than others so they couldn't get a distinction because the performance was not consistent. They had lots of good ideas and they worked well together as a group and were able to make changes quickly when they lost some people from their group.
Improvement
To improve their technical skills should have been more consistent and they could have used more physical theatre so they wouldn't have to keep on going back and forth. Their timing could have been a bit better when saying lines together so that they were synchronized and they needed to know their objective because at some points they had no expression on their face so they looked neutral. Finally they could have been more aware of their audience and used the three sides more because sometimes they had their backs to one side for quite a long time.
